Investigation of northern migration of Schistosoma mekong in Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

Description of the project and objectives:
This study is an epidemiology research for control of the schistosomiasis in Lao PDR. The major aims of the study are to perform risk evaluation of
Schistosoma mekongi by conducting the disease survey in Vangvieng district of Vientiane Province. The items of research are to determine the distribution of vector snails and implementation of the patient survey in the areas. These research findings contribute to the policy of the government which secures the safety of this area, which is a major tourist site.

Results:
A screening system using Real-time PCR for Schistosoma mekongi was established in this study. No Neotricula aperta was found in Nam Song River of Vangvieng up to April 2013. On-site stool and blood collections of more than 1000 adults and children are being screen for S.mekongi
